This is in response
to the article written by Erin Neff and printed in the Las Vegas Review Journal
on September 19th 2006 titled
"Some candidates just
spooky".
Original
article text can be found here.
Note: The Review
Journal did print a partial correction shown below.
CORRECTION -- 9/23/06
The political and military background of 1st Congressional District candidate
Kenneth Wegner was incorrect in Tuesday's Erin Neff column. Wegner sought
election to the U.S. Senate in 2004, not the 3rd Congressional District, and he
served in the Persian Gulf War in 1991.
Original Article
displayed in normal text - Mr. Wegner's rebuttal in italics.
RJ/Neff: I first met
Ken Wegner two years ago, when he tried unsuccessfully to win the Republican
nomination in the 3rd Congressional District. He's wearing a suit this year,
cleaning up enough to possibly draw more than 30 percent of the vote against
Democratic incumbent Shelley Berkley.
Mr. Wegner: None
needed - Retracted on 9/23/06. Mr. Wegner ran for Senate in 2004.
RJ/Neff: During a recent Review-Journal editorial board
meeting, he kept using the collective "we" to describe the warrant
work he does each night. "When we call dispatch," or, "We pulled
a guy off a lunch cart." It was never clear, however, who he was working
with as a bail enforcement agent or who was paying him for cuffing bad guys.
Mr. Wegner: The "we" I
am referring to are the various different bail enforcement agents and bail
bond's companies I am affiliated with. If she would have asked, I could have
provided her with an extensive list like the National Fugitive Recovery Agency
and Bad Boy Bail Bonds LLC. I have been licensed by the State of Nevada to perform this
work since October 1st 2004. My Nevada Lic. Number 200955
RJ/Neff: At one point he referred to his job as
"volunteer warrant service" and said he went to an academy at
community college for 2 1/2 years to get licensed.
Mr. Wegner: I attended
CCSN and graduated with an Associate Of Arts Degree December 23, 199 and
complete Bail Enforcement Training on October 1st, 2004.
RJ/Neff: Hmm. In an
interview for the Review-Journal's voter guide prior to the primary election,
he said he had attended UNLV for two years, studying education and history.
Mr. Wegner: I attended
UNLV from 1998 to 1999 and have received a total of 27 Semester units not including the 93.5 units
transferred from other schools.
RJ/Neff: Describing
his military service, Wegner said he was in, then got discharged and "went
all over the world to places I've never been or seen," before re-enlisting
for the 1992 Gulf War. Spooky.
Mr. Wegner: What's so
Spooky about server my country in times of war? I believe that military service
is a privilege I am honored to have been a part of defending my country
RJ/Neff Then there's the little
question about why he wouldn't accept any campaign contributions from political
action committees or community groups such as Nevada Concerned Citizens. I
asked him why he returned NCC's check."I have a really cute secretary," Wegner responded, using an
analogy comparing campaign fundraising to extramarital temptation. "My
wife's had a few kids, doesn't have a great body anymore and my secretary is
really hot.
"It's that first kiss that's going to kill you," he continued.
"My secretary just wants a kiss."
A slippery slope indeed.
Mr. Wegner: What I was explaining to
her was that the current state of political campaign fundraising in this nation
is equivalent to flirting with someone ‘not your wife'. Once you start down
that path of accepting money from special interest groups, your integrity and loyalties
change.
I personally find it hard to believe
that she is trying to paint me as some sort of wacko when I am clearly stating
I will not accept money from any Special Interest Group because when you accept
money from a PAC like Nevada Concerned Citizens your loyalties change. I also
want to be known I never received a check from the Nevada Concerned Citizens
Group but I have returned checks from other PAC's even when their views are aligned
with mine.
Campaign Finance Reform starts with
me!
